External Graphic Expansion for Notebook: ViDock Gfx

Nowadays notebook price become more and more affordable compared to few years back. With portable advantage, wifi support and wireless broadband, it is better choice compared to desktop PC. There is one thing notebook always lose to desktop, graphic performance. Many notebook still has limited power of graphic processing power. Most of it cannot play advance 3D games and HD video.

Now more and more company try to offer external graphic upgrade for notebook and one of it is Village Tronic with ViDock Gfx. It support multiple display functionality, better performance 3D applications and games and HD 1080p video playback. It multiple display support 2 analog or 2 digital display at 2560 x 1600 each. There are three models for ViDock Gfx series:
ViDock Gfs Business Edition
ATI X1550 or NVidia GF7200GS
128MB DDR2

ViDock Gfs Pro Edition
ATI HD2600 Pro or NVidia GF8600GT
512MB DDR2

ViDock Gfx Mac Edition
ATI X1550 and 128MB DDR2

ViDock device is using ExpressCard interface which has a limitation in term of bandwidth. The ExpressCard bus is functionally very close to the ancient AGP 1.0 standard, about a quarter the one-way bandwidth of AGP 4x and an eighth of AGP 8x. This bandwidth limitation is most certainly going to limit the performance of an external graphics solution using the ExpressCard interface.

Where the ViDock shines and becomes very attractive is for the user who already has a laptop but wants all of these features—multiple display functionality, increased graphics performance, HD video playback, and the convenience of a docking station—all in a single package.

Unfortunately, interested buyers must already have a laptop with an integrated GeForce or Radeon chipset, and perhaps even a specific operating system, so the ViDock’s market is somewhat limited out of the gate.

AMD Announces 6 And 12-core Opterons

AMD has updated its server processor roadmap with single-die 6-core and dual-die 12-core Opteron processors. The new processors will be manufactured in a 45 nm process that will be introduced with the Shanghai quad-core later this year.

When Intel rolls out its Nehalem processors later this year, AMD appears to be better prepared than in late 2006 when Core began its triumph and until today pretty much wiped out all of the gains AMD Opteron has made in previous years. On the server side, AMD will counter Intel with the Shanghai quad-core CPU, which will be based on the current Barcelona technology, but will be manufactured in 45 nm and bring performance and power consumption benefits.

According to vice president Randy Allen, Shanghai will deliver about 20% more speed than Barcelona. While the chip will remain compatible with the current Socket F (1207) platform, the L3 cache will triple to 6 MB, 3-lane HT3 support will be integrated and DDR memory support will be extended to 800 MHz devices. AMD claims that the idle power consumption of the new CPUs will be 20% below their 65 nm counterparts.

Production of the 45 nm chip, which has been sampled to server vendors, is scheduled to begin late this year, while first products should be surfacing in Q1 2009. In the second half of that year, AMD plans to release a single-die 6-core Socket F processor code-named Istanbul. Offered for two- and four-socket systems, the chip will be clocked at lower clock speeds than the quad-cores.

A completely new platform (read: a departure from Socket F) is planned to be introduced in 2010. Called the "Maranello" platform, AMD will then transition to DDR3 memory and four HT3 lanes. The multi-socket processors will include the monolithic 6-core "Sao Paulo" with 6 MB of L3 cache, new hardware throttling and power management features, as well as the dual-die 12-core "Magny Cours" processor with 12 MB L3 cache. Both processors will be built in 45 nm. At least at this time AMD does not anticipate any Nvidia chipsets to support this platform and says that it will couple the CPU with its own RD890S and RD870S northbridges as well as the SB700S southbridge.

Eagle-eyed readers may wonder about those production dates. A late 2008 45 nm volume production of these processors matches the information we received from industry sources and would mean that AMD will put 45 nm into production just about one year behind Intel. Intel plans on introducing 32 nm processors in late 2009 and AMD now indicates that its Sao Paulo and Magny Cours processors will be manufactured in 45 nm in the first half of 2010, leading us to believe that 32 nm won’t arrive until the second half of the year in a best case scenario. This could mean that AMD keeps up with Intel, but won’t gain any ground on Intel in this discipline anytime soon.

Randy Allen responded to our inquiry by saying that this assessment would not be accurate as server processors do not reflect the entire product range of AMD. However, at least for 45 nm, we have credible sources indicating that 45 nm AMD CPUs won’t arrive before Q4 of this year. The 2010 processors are too far out to speculate whether Intel will deliver them at the end of 2009 and whether AMD will have any 32 nm chips available in Q1 2010. But clearly, at least for now, the 2006 promises AMD made to analysts aren’t likely to be kept.

Until Shanghai arrives, AMD will have to survive with its Barcelona quad-core and it is not surprising that the company touts the power-efficiency drum to compare itself favorably to competing Intel products. Allen claimed that AMDs 75 watt part Opteron 2356 saves about 20% of power when idle, 14% in high-load scenarios and 10% under full-load when compared to Intel’s (45 nm) 80 watt Xeon 5440. The executive also noted that the Opteron delivers on average 13% more performance than its Intel counterpart.

Those claims are based on five SPEC benchmarks as well as two fluid dynamics tests. It often depends on a very specific need that exploits a very specific capability of a processor as the results in each of those benchmarks can change dramatically. While AMD claims a 19% lead in SPECompMBase2001, a 13 and 19% in SPECfprate_base2006 and SPECfprate_2006, we were not able to verify the latter two results. In fact, official SPEC results indicate that at least one Intel Xeon 5440 systems is 29% and 26% ahead of the best performing Opteron 2356 system listed.

Watch Free P2P Online TV Broadcasting: TVU Networks

TVU networks offers a free global live TV service that you can watch on your Windows PC over a broadband Internet connection. This service is dedicated to bringing you TV that you can't get from cable or satellite, such as news and sports from around the world.

The TVU service is accessed with a free downloadable Windows application, the TVUPlayer, which is available here. The TVU service, accessed via its free TVUPlayer application, has been downloaded 12 million times by viewers in over 200 countries.

TVU uses a new broadcast technology called Real-Time Packet Replication. With this technology, all the viewers who are watching a channel at the same time are cooperating to give everyone the best possible signal. TVU's application does not create any new files on your hard disk because you're watching live TV.

Unlike typical Internet video broadcasts that use the older streaming technology, TVU's broadcasters do not need to dedicate more bandwidth for each additional user. This allows broadcasters to reach very large numbers of viewers at low cost. Because TVU can have an unlimited number of channels, TVU offers broadcasters opportunities denied to them by cable and satellite systems. Local broadcasters become global broadcasters; new channels can find a broadcast slot; and bigger broadcasters can create new channels to showcase content that they own but don't have space to broadcast on their existing channels.

Most exciting of all, viewers can become broadcasters using TVU networks' free Broadcast application. This application, combined with a standard-grade PC and a typical broadband Internet connection, allows anybody to become a broadcaster. This basic set-up allows any number of viewers world-wide to watch your channel.

Champions League: Liverpool Advances To Semi-Final

It was a dramatic game when 6 goals has been scored in 90 minutes and Liverpool has won the game 4-2 with the aggregate 5-3. It was Arsenal's Diaby who scored the first goal in 13 minutes and gave Arsenal lead 1-0. On 30 minutes, Liverpool got a corner kick and Gerard delivered it to the middle of penalty box and Sami Hyypia headed to the net. On the first half the result was draw, 1-1.

On the seconds half Torres scored the second goal for Liverpool in 69 minutes. Liverpool now lead on aggregate but another Arsenal goal would send them through on away goals. In 72 minutes Arsenal bring in Theo Walcott and Van Persie to strengthen their attacking, while Liverpool bring in Ryan Babel in 78 minutes to keep pressure on Arsenal. In 84 minutes Adebayor scored a goal and now Arsenal lead by away goals. A minute later Babel was fouled in penalty area by Toure and Liverpool has been awarded with penalty. Gerrard scored the penalty and now Liverpool lead again.

It seem like the score will end up 3-2 but in 92 minutes Babel scored a goal for Liverpool. Liverpool won the game 4-2 with the aggregate 5-3. It was really good to watch my favorite football team won the match and progress to semi-final. Another result was Chelsea who also won the game 2-0 with aggregate 3-2.

Yahoo Calls Emergency Board Meeting, Rejects Microsoft Bid

Yahoo’s board of directors held an emergency meeting over the weekend to discuss the latest developments in Microsoft’s buyout offer. According to media sources, the board believes the bid, currently valued at $29.36 a share, undervalues Yahoo. The board is expected to reject the offer, something that will probably bring Microsoft into a full-scale battle for Yahoo.

According to the Financial Times, an inside source said the board was meeting late on Sunday. Currently, Yahoo execs believe Microsoft’s bid is too low. However, the seemingly low price is due in part to the slip in Microsoft’s share price in the past few months. Back on February 1st, Microsoft bid $31 cash or .95 shares of Microsoft stock for each Yahoo common stock. That offer had a total value of approximately $44.6 billion at the time. But Microsoft’s stock has since slipped to $29.36 a share.

According to the New York Times, Yahoo’s board is expected to reject Microsoft’s bid. Microsoft’s CEO Steve Ballmer is refusing to raise the bid because there are currently no other companies vying for Yahoo. In fact, Ballmer has hinted at lowering the price and eventually going directly to the shareholders if the board refuses to act on the offer.

UPDATE - Yahoo’s Chairman Jerry Yang has formally rejected Microsoft’s bids and Ballmer’s threat. In a public statement, Yang says the board is open to alternatives that "maximize" shareholder value (meaning more money).

"To be clear, this includes a transaction with Microsoft if it represents a price that fully recognizes the value of Yahoo! on a standalone basis and to Microsoft, is superior to our other alternatives, and provides certainty of value and certainty of closing. Lastly, we are steadfast in our commitment to choosing a path that maximizes stockholder value and we will not allow you or anyone else to acquire the company for anything less than its full value," said Yang.

Atom For Small Devices

Intel has announced a new chip to it processor family. This chip will be called Atom, built purposely for small device like Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs), affordable Internet-focused notebooks (netbooks), and desktops (nettops).

We can see today the demand for small and cheaper devices mainly use for web browsers, email clients, or simple network media players. This kind of devices don't need powerful processors like Intel's Core 2 or AMD's Phenom processors. These kind of devices need small low energy and low cost but powerful enough to browse and surf the internet. These sort of softwares can easily run on Pentium III processor. With the latest technology we can build a microprocessor that offer the same performance as Pentium III with low power that can run without heatsink and cheap enough for mobile devices.

This new Atom processor is built on Intel's 45nm manufacturing process and will have 47 million transistors. It is Intel's smallest and lowest power of x86 microprocessor with just about 25mm² and powerful enough for full internet capabilities. Atom will has power consumption ranging from subwatt to 2.5 watts with idle power as low as 30mW.

In term of performance, Intel claims that Atom will offer the same performance of the first Pentium M with lower power. A 1.6Ghz Atom will be 20% faster than 800Mhz Pentium M. Comparing Atom to ARM11 processor (built by ARM limited) in web page render times, Atom is about 4 to 6 times faster. This performance is far below today's Intel Core 2 family but you don't need so much power when all you do is browsing internet or play a movie on mobile devices.

You will begin seeing the first devices with Atom processor over the next six months. It is an opportunity to offer more Asus EeePC like devices in future as new generation of Atom will be more powerful and multi-tasking. Right now Intel's Atom will be competing with ARM processor in CE market and I believe sooner or later AMD will enter this market segment and offer more cost effective processors.

The End of High Definition War

It was a long battle of high definition war between Blu-ray team (Sony and Pioneer) and HD-DVD team (Toshiba and NEC). At first the HD-DVD team with the support from Warner Brothers and Microsoft seem to have an advantage due to cheaper players and discs. Sony who had lose in format war between VHS and Betamax back in 80s learned that they cannot afford another lose in format war. With the launched of Sony Playstaion 3 with the Blu-ray drive, the format war slowly start to favor to Blu-Ray. Even though HD-DVD had X-box 360 support as an add-on drive, the popularity of Play Station 3 had helped Sony to win this war.

When Warner Brothers announced that they will stop release HD-DVD movie after May 2008, the format war has become clear that the Blu-Ray will be the future format for High Definition. In February 19, Toshiba announced that they will no longer develop and manufacture HD-DVD player. Now consumers has no worry anymore to choose which player to buy as the winner of HD war is Blu-ray.

With the high price of Blu-ray players now, we have to wait for another few years before we can see Blu-Ray is well accepted by all levels of consumers. The current DVD format will still dominating sales in movies, players, and computer parts for many years before it slowly replace with Blu-ray.

Fishing at Laguna Pond

It was an evening on Friday, I had nothing to do and I don't want to make any appointment because of Friday evening, as always heavy traffic jam. I decided to drop by to the pay pond near my house, opposite the road of Giant Kelana Jaya and behind Shell station.

When I arrived at the pond, there were only few of regular anglers and I guess it was due to the flood. I ask them about their catch for today and they said not really good. Since there were only few people fishing, I started to call my friends asking whether they are coming or not tonight. Some said they are coming, so I decided to fish and started to take out my fishing equipments from my car.

These are few pictures of Laguna Pond
As you can see it still flooding

My fishing equipments:
Rod: Abu Garcia Ultra Cast II 6'
Reel: Mitchel 310e
Line: Relix 12lb

At first, I used hong to casting until seven something but couldn't get single bite from the fish. After that around 7.30pm I changed to floating bread but I was a bit difficult to cast due to wind. I got my first strike and managed to land small lampam about palm size. My 2nd and 3rd strike end up with nothing because of the main line was cut off. I'm not sure whether it because of the fish was too big or my drag was too tight. I loosed up a bit my drag and cast again the floating bread. After 10 minutes i got strike again and this time I managed to land quit big pacu, I think nearly 3kg.

My first pacu

My 5th strike also pacu, but a bit smaller compared to the first one. I got another 3 hits but all end up with the main line cut off. It was another good fishing day, even though I only managed to catch 3 fishes.
Pak Man with my 2nd Pacu

The worker there also took the opportunity to pose with the fish

Wireless Broadband in Malaysia

Nowadays there are many providers in Malaysia offering wireless broadband connection. Existing internet provider like TM and Jaring were the first to offer this service through wifi or hotspot. When edge and 3G technology became available, mobile providers like Digi, Celcom and Maxis take the advantages of high speed data connection to offer their own wireless internet connection. The latest player to join is U Broadband from U-Mobile Surf which is now consider as most value for money wireless broadband package.

With so many packages to choose which one will suit your usages? If you are using internet just for surfing and read emails, the basic unlimited packages from Digi, Celcom or Maxis should be the best. This is considering the mobile coverage of these 3 providers, where you can get the connection in most cities or residential areas. For heavy user who always need fastest connection I think Celcom Broadband plan will be the best. Considering Celcom 3G is the widest coverage among all 3 major players.

Most of the broadband packages promoting with the USB modem which you need to pay extra money for the modem price. Now with promotion price you can buy the USB modem around RM600~700. If you think it is too expensive for this tiny gadgets, you can use cheaper PCMCIA card or just use your existing 3G phone as a modem.

Veteran Politician Want To Be Blogger

It was an article in most Malaysia Newspapers today reported about former Minister, Datuk Seri Lim Keng Yaik to start his own blog. It seem like blogger is not just for young people anymore, anyone at any age could start their own blog to express or sharing their idea. Now blogging is not just as a hobby anymore, you can even generate income from it. Some have become pro or semi-pro blogger where they received a good pay from advertising company.

There is another article about Raja Petra being ordered by court to pay RM4 million in damages for his article in Malaysia Today. Whether the article was true or not, sometime internet has become an alternative platform to provide information instead of conventional platform like tvs and newspapers. Even our prime minister admitted one of the reasons BN poor performance in general election was the internet. BN didn't take the opportunity like the opposition parties to use as a propaganda or to promote their party where more and more people like to get information from internet than newspapers and tvs.

Powerful Intergrated Graphic Chipset From AMD

Finally we will be able to play DirectX 10 games and play HD DVD or Blu-Ray movies without require add-in graphic card. The new 780 chipset from AMD will also support HDCP and HDMI interface. The chipset has integrated Radeon HD3200 graphics unit which make this chip so powerful in it class. Since the motherboard with this chipset yet to arrive Malaysia, I cannot confirm the price range will be. One thing for sure is we can built a powerful system much much cheaper with integrated graphic on board. This will definitely become my main target to built system with Vista capable.

Just imagine in just few years from now there will be processors that 1000 times faster than today's chip. What can you do with the speed of these processors. Poor Customer Service From TM Streamyx

Since I was using Streamyx from August 2006, I did experience few problems like the ID hang and cannot login. Normally when I called their center, the problem can immediately solve. Last week problem was a bit unusual, when I came home I cannot login to streamyx. The DSL lamp was off and sometime blinking. So I make a report to TM call center and they promised the problem will be solve within two days. After two days my streamyx still cannot login and I double check my report again with them. They told me that their technician has already reset the port near our residence. I told them that my streamyx still got problem and cannot connect or login. They told me that they will ask the technician to look again my problem and I have to wait another two days. I told them that I suspected there was something wrong with the modem and I requested them to send technician to my house to double check and confirm this problem and they said they will do that. After 2 days, the problem still unsettle, no technician come to my house and I start angry with TM customer service. I called them again to check the status of my report. They said the technician found there was a problem with our line and they already reset it. I told them that I still cannot connect or login to streamyx and I asked them why there was nobody come to our house or call us to double check whether the problem was solved or not. They told me that I never request for that. I lost my passion and start quarrel with them. They said they will send the technician to come to my house within 2 days. I asked them why can't they send the technician the next day? They said they can't promise that, but within 2 days they will make sure the technician will come. I was so disappointed as I can't wait any longer. So I start doing the troubleshooting on my own, checking all the connection, hacked the modem and did the diagnose. The was a problem with the diagnose and i tried few times to reset the modem to original setting. At last I was able to connect to streamyx. Even though, part of the problem was mine because I didn't do proper troubleshooting but I still feel very disappointed with the level of TM customer service gave to me. They should make sure and confirm with the customer whether the problem was solved or not. I hope they could improve this in the future.

Welcome

Firstly I would like to thank you and welcome to my blog. The reason I created this blog is to publish my interest in gadgets, computing, internet and fishing. I cannot imagine how could I live without this things. I spend not less than 4 hours everyday in front of my PC/laptop, mostly doing nothing, just surf the internet to read news, latest info on IT, cars and gadgets. On the weekend, normally I will spend most of my time with my family especially my son, Amir Danish. If I had nothing to do then I will go fishing and I'm lucky because there are few pay ponds just nearby my house.

By starting this blog I hope can update my everyday activity and I hope I can make more friends with same interest.
